Fort Macon

We live in a country full of history and endurance. Fort Macon is a prime example. Situated on the east end of Bogue Banks in Carteret County, it's one of the most popular state parks in the United States. As I walked around, I couldn't help feel the history of this place.

It is a pentagon shape fortress built in 1826-1834, today, the fort looks much the same as when it was built.

General Robert E. Lee was stationed at Fort Macon as a young Army officer.

The scene of an significant Civil War Battle while occupied by confederate troops, the fort was under a Union artillery siege from March 23-April 26, 1862.

It's fall into Union hands gave the Northern forces complete control of the entire North Carolina coast. It was regarrisoned during the Spanish-American War and again during World War II.

Now Fort Macon is known for swimming, fishing, nature programs and trails, guided tours, and a museum with numerous exhibits and displays.

Thanks for visiting! Hope you liked your tour of Fort Macon, NC!

  1. Thanks for the tour...growing up, my father took us near and far to as many state parks as could be visited within a day's drive. This brought back those memories. Love the Civil War details you added to give the history.

  4. My husband and I are complete American history geeks. Our vacations pretty much always include a trip to a site of historical significance. Our girls even embrace it. (Most of the time). ;)
