Cable Knit Sweater Pillow

The Cable Knit Pillow. I've been enamored with them probably since this time last year, and after seeing this one in the Nate Berkus collection, I went a-thrifting and found a nice sweater to transform into my very own cable knit sweater pillow.

I would like to say that this was one of the easiest projects ever, but that would be a fib. Maybe for a more seasoned seamstress, scratch that, anyone but me, it would be a fairly easy project.

I did the standard measuring and sewing, but because of the stretch factor, I ended up sewing a seam again, 2 inches in and had a little waste.

I used a down insert, it gives it that squishy look that I really like. And even though I didn't attempt the fancy button treatment like on Nate's, I like how it turned out.

And I think might want to attempt another one, having learned from this one!

Do you like the look of sweater pillows?

Ribbon Pillow

Just when you thought I couldn't get one more pillow on my sofa...I went and made another one. Just for the record, I am not a seamstress, but simple, elementary projects: I'm OK...just don't ask me to whip out a dress or anything.
If you read my post about embellishing store bought curtains with ribbon, then you know I have discovered the genius of Heat n Bond....which inspired this whole project...I want to see what all I can bond together!
I found this beauteous fabric at Walmart in the 1.00/yd bin, not only was it a beautiful shade of turquoise, but it has the most beautiful shade of cobalt blue on the reverse, that I just fell in love with!

Because I can't sew, yet have some sort of fabric fetish, I bought some and decided to first make a pillow, then maybe with the remaining yardage perhaps squeak out a tablecloth. Unless I can get my dear MIL to sew for me. Elaine are you out there?
I wanted a lumbar type pillow and cut a rough shape out. I planned to have the cobalt on the back, but wanted to have a smidgen on the front too, I cut about about 4" off one side
and flipped it over

I sewed it up and ironed the seam flat

Using Heat n Bond and the same ribbon I used on the curtains, I adhered two strips of the plain ribbon side by side and a second ribbon from my stash, on top, right over the seam. I love the little white stitching on it.

I sewed the pillow up and turned it right side out. It looked pretty good...so far

I stuffed it with poly-fil and hand sewed the opening. I've never sewn ribbon before, but it was really easy and looked nice and tidy.
You might notice in this picture that I forgot to flip the fabric over to have the solid cobalt on the back before I sewed the pillow, oh well...

That will just give me an excuse to make another pillow!!! :)

Loverly!

Pillow Project

I can't sew. Because of this fact, the following project might be offensive to those of you who can. I have a machine and I can basically {sort of} sew a straight line....but when it comes to entricate design, skill and God help me patterns....it's not pretty.

The other ladies in my family can sew....my grandmother was a seamstress for crying out loud, but along with the cooking gene, I didn't get the sewing gene. dagnabit.

Am I gonna let a little thing like ability stop me? Nooooo....

Like I said I can sew a straight line, and if you can we are golden!!!

I was leisurely strolling through one of my favorite antique shops and someone had an entire rack of discontinued fabric samples for sale. Still very pretty fabrics, just no longer being manufactured, and for 25 cents each, a whole stack-a-roo came home with me.

I thought these two fabrics coordinated very well and then I did that thing that I don't do very well....and things were going pretty, well: good!

I used an old pillow that with three kids {including my husband} had seen better days as a filler...it looked really nice and I only had to rip out 1 seam-those fabric samples are not as straight as they look! It looked awesome! But then I got to looking some more and I put it on the sofa and looked at it again and I decided it didn't look finished. A lot of head tilting went on...So then I {finally} thought about a button..yes that would do the trick!

So I eye-balled it in the center and sewed it on with jute twine {is there nothing you can't do with jute? or is it: is there anything that you can't do with jute. either way jute is awesome!}

I think the jute adds a little more detail

I think I like it! It is certainly better than it was!!!

I think it picks up all the color in the rug too!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you're inspired!
