Ribbon Pillow

Just when you thought I couldn't get one more pillow on my sofa...I went and made another one. Just for the record, I am not a seamstress, but simple, elementary projects: I'm OK...just don't ask me to whip out a dress or anything.
If you read my post about embellishing store bought curtains with ribbon, then you know I have discovered the genius of Heat n Bond....which inspired this whole project...I want to see what all I can bond together!
I found this beauteous fabric at Walmart in the 1.00/yd bin, not only was it a beautiful shade of turquoise, but it has the most beautiful shade of cobalt blue on the reverse, that I just fell in love with!

Because I can't sew, yet have some sort of fabric fetish, I bought some and decided to first make a pillow, then maybe with the remaining yardage perhaps squeak out a tablecloth. Unless I can get my dear MIL to sew for me. Elaine are you out there?
I wanted a lumbar type pillow and cut a rough shape out. I planned to have the cobalt on the back, but wanted to have a smidgen on the front too, I cut about about 4" off one side
and flipped it over

I sewed it up and ironed the seam flat

Using Heat n Bond and the same ribbon I used on the curtains, I adhered two strips of the plain ribbon side by side and a second ribbon from my stash, on top, right over the seam. I love the little white stitching on it.

I sewed the pillow up and turned it right side out. It looked pretty good...so far

I stuffed it with poly-fil and hand sewed the opening. I've never sewn ribbon before, but it was really easy and looked nice and tidy.
You might notice in this picture that I forgot to flip the fabric over to have the solid cobalt on the back before I sewed the pillow, oh well...

That will just give me an excuse to make another pillow!!! :)

Loverly!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you're inspired!!!

Black+White=Love

It's a dresser now, but it didn't use to be. It has a long history, I'm guessing mid to late 60's, maybe early 70's. It was my Grandmother's desk at one time. I think it would have looked like this:

Via Design Sponge

I don't know the story, although I wish I did. Why did Sadie Mae cut up her desk!?! The only thing I do know is that she did it herself. I can imagine her with some kind of saw, going to town on it! She was that kinda gal.

I have lugged this thing around with my, ever since she passed away in 1997. I did not ever try to repair it, nor did I now, I like the fact that she left her mark on it. I did, however, think it was time for a paint job, and a bold one at that. I know she likes it.

Here is the before, your standard run-of-the-mill
veneer top, nice clean lines, and I quite like the hardware, they are original.

It has seen better days, and it will again, after I get done with it!

here is the gnarly side, left intact. It's staying. Call me sentimental.

I gave the dresser a good cleaning, and painted it with a standard black and white latex enamel. Cleaned up the hardware.....

I was in L.O.V.E. I mean it.

Talk about being out of my comfort zone, I am walking on the edge of something totally unfamiliar here! I am taking charge of the ho-hum living room I once had and I am shaking it up a bit!!!

Continuing on with adding color to my living room, I spray painted a leaf dish with, can you guess? You got it! Krylon's Ivy leaf. I am not afraid, OK, maybe a little, but there's no turning back now! I was ready to give this back to the Goodwill, which is where I found it, but I'm back in love with it!

Now, I've got to tell you. But not today. This little dresser is holding a lot of secrets. One of which you will have to wait and see...

What else could I have done to this little gem?

Stay tuned!

Logan's Room: Fun Projects

Oh good! You're back!

Working in Logan's room has been really fun, and I've been doing some fun projects, just to really pull the details together, I hope you like them.

First, lets do a little re-cap because I've broken his room down into so many parts!
I first showed you the Goodwill armoire: I color washed old fence planks to create a fun piece.

Thank you for all the comments on this and the great feature over at Mustard Seed Creations ! We have been living with this for a about 3 weeks now and it still makes me happy just looking at it!

Then I showed you the fabric I used in his room. The amazing women in my life helped me pull off some great sewing projects {Thank you Elaine and Colleen}

Now, for some of the handmade projects and accessories I used in his room. I know, I know, how can I use accessories in a 4 year olds room? Let's just say, very carefully!!
With the vintage feel of the key fabric I used, I started liking the idea of using vintage toys. I haven't collected a whole bunch yet, but I'm always on the look out for fun vintage toys whenever I'm thrifting.
I did find a fantastic vintage lamp that I totally love Logan really likes... I need to replace the shade, but otherwise I love the chippy finish!

On several different trips, I found vintage toy blocks, an old rattle, a glass baby bottle {I just thought it was neat, not really a toy} and a small collection of paperback classic stories. Right now I keep them in an apothecary jar on top of his dresser.

I made some of the artwork in his room and some art I kept from Keegan's room that he out grew a long, long time ago...
Remember the marquee signs that used the vinyl lettering? Well because of the digital age, those types of signs are becoming obsolete. I got my hands on a whole box of numbers and decided to do an art project.

I primed and painted an MDF board and strategically placed the numbers in a fun random pattern (that's right; strategically random. Yes, I'm a little nutty :)

I love the graphic punch and the red and white looks really great.

Right now, it's leaning above his dresser, it may stay like this....or I might come up with a different configuration down the road.

I hung a nice cast iron star right above the art piece (from Hobby Lobby). I love the juxtaposition of the graphic nature of the art with the rustic star.

I created a fun tassel for the bandanna valance on the windows. Yes, you can use a tassel in a little boys room!! :)

I made it out of a napkin ring (found at the GW) and jute twine. It was 15 minutes well spent, I love how it turned out. I think I remember making these out of yarn when I was a little girl...

I glued buttons in fun colors around the napkin ring, just to keep it playful.

I think I want to make a second one to hang on the apothecary jar lid too...

I have a real love affair going with burlap and since burlap is definitely on the rustic side, it has made it's appearance as a pennant banner. I was so inspired by Jen's
Spooky Banner, that I used the same idea, just used Logan's name instead. Jen is really inspiring, if you haven't check out Tatortots and Jello, you really must! Jen always has great projects and tutorials to boot, just like this one!

I hung the banner across the curtains and I gotta tell you, I love looking at it!

I did modify Jen's method just a tad and used different font. I printed the letters I wanted to use from my word processor, laid the cut burlap pennant over the letter, traced with a Sharpie and filled in with black acrylic paint. The burlap is just transparent enough to trace out the letters. This was such an easy project, I think I will make more for the holidays!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you are enjoying the process of Logan's room! I hope you're inspired! I have a couple more furniture projects to show you and the whole room reveal!

Crocheted Doily Baskets

With Easter coming up very soon, I've been trying to come up with cute Easter gift ideas. Stiffening doilies is certainly not a new idea, but I have never tried it until now, and it's super easy!

I purchased this particular doily at the Dollar Tree, but the Goodwill or other thrifty places are a great sources as well. I remember my mom using doilies under everything! You might have some of these on hand!

What you'll need:

~Fabric stiffener (any brand)
~Doily
~Various dishes and/or bowls

Using a small bowl, start saturating the doily with the stiffener. Get it completely wet, but not dripping

Depending on how "deep" you want your doily basket, lay it either on the outside OR on the inside of the bowl. On the outside will produce a broader basket, and in the inside of the bowl, the basket will be smaller. I'm not talking a significant size changes, put there is a difference. I did both ways and I think I like the one on the outside of the bowl...you can get stuff in the basket!

Eye ball the doily until it's even all the way around, you don't want a crooked basket. The stiffener does take time to dry. I would say overnight, but I wasn't that patient. I checked it periodically and when it was dry I started prying!

Notice I said prying. That is what you have to do: pry. It's a little scary, and with the first one I was pretty nervous, it is hard to get off. Little by little, inching around and around, until finally, it is loose. And what you have produced is a beautiful petite little doily basket, ready for eggs or candies!
Here is a bigger one ( I did several sizes) and I didn't have a bowl large enough...so I put it on the outside of the largest one I had and then put the upside down bowl on a glass, so the doily dried sort of suspended. This is probably my favorite one, and it was a goodwill find.

Look at the little baby ones! I know a Michelle little daughter or granddaughter would love to receive one of these full of candy!

I put little easter grass in them and my glittered eggs, but I think they would be suitable for any season of gift-giving.

This is a really fun project...I had upside down bowls all over the kitchen!

Thanks for stopping by! I hope you're inspired!
