Cable Knit Sweater Pillow

The Cable Knit Pillow. I've been enamored with them probably since this time last year, and after seeing this one in the Nate Berkus collection, I went a-thrifting and found a nice sweater to transform into my very own cable knit sweater pillow.

I would like to say that this was one of the easiest projects ever, but that would be a fib. Maybe for a more seasoned seamstress, scratch that, anyone but me, it would be a fairly easy project.

I did the standard measuring and sewing, but because of the stretch factor, I ended up sewing a seam again, 2 inches in and had a little waste.

I used a down insert, it gives it that squishy look that I really like. And even though I didn't attempt the fancy button treatment like on Nate's, I like how it turned out.

And I think might want to attempt another one, having learned from this one!

Do you like the look of sweater pillows?

  2. I am working on one of those myself! Do not worry, I have been sewing for many years and the stretch gave me a bit of trouble too. Mine is a heather gray with some silk in it. I washed and dried it before cutting so it would "fluff" up and I love the effect it gave. Enjoy!

  10. It looks so cozy! I also made a pillow from a cashmere cable sweater. The key to getting it right for me was to use the cables as a guide for sewing the sweater. I found it to be pretty easy this way. If you are interested, here are the details of how I made mine:

  11. Nice job, Michelle! I just saw one of these yesterday at Pier 1. I didn't even look to see how much it was, but I did touch it and it was nice and soft. I wouldn't mind having a few of these myself, but I don't know if I'd have the patience to make them myself, and deal with the stretchiness factor!

  13. The pillow turned out really nice. I think I would make sweater pillows out of hubby's old sweaters. IF I would enjoy sewing *lol* I am totally talent free when it comes to sewing. But who knows, maybe I will learn that too.

  14. Not only is the sweater pillow just perfection, the black/white damask one begind it is its foil. I hae a favorite sweater that is the most wonderful grey angora, beaded, embroidered, so pretty... but itchy beyond belief. I'm going to felt it and make a pillow/// Hopefully mine will turn out as pretty as yours! Lovely, thanks for sharing.

  24. Very cool! Thanks for stopping by my blog. Oh, and had you thought about buying some toggles and just sewing the on by hand. Looks great as is, but since you kind of liked the toggles...just an idea!

  25. I very much love your sweater pillow. I made one out of a sweater that my mom made my husband that he can no longer wear. It was a button up type and I buttoned it closed before I measured and cut. Now it has buttons on it and is wonderful that way.

  26. I love the look, but the only way I will have one is to buy it!

  27. I adore sweater pillows, but novice seamstress that I am, I'm afraid buying them is the only way for me. Fortunately just buying the cover at Pottery Barn didn't hurt too much -- $18.00 I think -- and it fit the form I had just beautifully. It's now one of my favorite pillows.
