Where is the Love?

Can I make a confession?

Valentine's Day is a rip off. Ouch. There, I said it, do you hate me?

What's wrong with me. Every girl loves receiving chocolates and flowers and extravagant dinners for Valentine's Day, right?

I think it's a waste of money. If flower's are going to be bought, buy me some bulbs I can plant in the garden. Chocolate is great, but I don't like the heart shaped box thingies that you have to read the diagram to figure out what flavor you're about to bite into. Besides, I'm very picky about my chocolate (and ice cream) so it's best to stick with what I like.

Oh, the brutality. I did try to get into the Valentine's Day mind set, but I just couldn't do it. I had a tablescape in mind, and I'm just not going to do it. I had some crafts I wanted to make, but I just didn't want to.

The only thing that I have actually crafted and not necessarily for Valentine's Day, maybe more for Spring. Crepe Paper Peonies.

I was perusing through my Martha Stewart's Encyclopedia of Crafts and stumbled across Crepe Paper Flowers, page 248. I did the peony in a fuchsia crepe paper and found it to be a little addictive and super easy to make.

I painted some glass bottles (Strawberry Crush Bottles) in fun spring colors and called it a day. That's my contribution to V-day this year. Was this too real? :)
Maybe I'm just grumpy and tired of the snow.

Do you love Valentine's Day or are you done with it?

  1. i'm 100% with you on the valentines day thoughts! WASTE OF MONEY!! i'd rather get flowers a week later for $10 instead of $50 the week of v-day. the only decor i've done for it is my blog header. i might make a post about love...but i don't know. anyways...yes...you are so right and there is nothing wrong with you!! thank you for saying it out loud.

  2. I agree with you. I normally don't decorate for it. I did this year more for my kiddos. They get a kick out of the different holidays. My husband and I agreed a long time ago to not buy eachother anything, yet make a nice family dinner for one another. We trade off each year. I get the odd years and he gets even :) It's fun to see what eachother comes up with.

  3. High five! I don't see the point in V-Day or even decorating for it.

  4. I completely agree! I hung up a few hearts, but that's it. Thanks for the reminder about your Martha Stewart book. I have the encyclopedia too and am going to bust it out tonight for some inspiration :) Forgot I had it!

  5. I didn't do one single decoration for V-Day this year. I'm like you, I think it is kind of a silly holiday. I told my husband long ago not to waste money on flowers. I'd rather have them for the yard.

  6. You go girl! This has been my stand for years. I told my hubby this when we were just teenagers & we have never really fallen into the Vday trap. Love is love all year long. I think valentines day is a Hallmark holiday. Little kids enjoy it, but beyond age 7, it is just a money pit!

  7. I'm totally with you. I told my husband to skip the ridiculous flower delivery and buy me some Tom's. I'll cook dinner. I'll be happy too. I do love some red and pink, and the V-Day decor .... I just hate wasted money on flowers, gross chocolates and eating at fancy restaurants on the same night as everyone else!

  8. Wow...there are more of us than I realized. I used to love V-day when I was a kid because it was fun exchanging Valentines with my classmates...but that was in elementary school and those days are long gone!

  9. I don't really get into Valentines Day. I would rather get flowers some random day out of the year but I am always up for my favorite chocolate!!

  10. I don't go all out but I do like Valentine's day. Don't care much about getting gifts for this day but I think it is a great opportunity to teach kids about love.

Come see our countdown activities that have bible verses pertaining to love.

  11. Growing up, I dislike it intensely!! (a better phrase than "I hated it"?). These days, I don't really care. It's not that big a deal in Guatemala, anyways, so no special decorating, nor crafting. A few "signs" at my blog, but that's about it. I figure, I can eat chocolate and candy any other day, right? and go out to dinner any other weekend, so why all the fuzz on just one day?!
    yep...I'm with ya!! :o)
Great crepe flowers, by the way!

  12. I love Valentines Day myself maybe it's because I love red and pink, and love all the decorations, and this aisles filled with those colors at the store...I look forward to the cookie exchange the ladies at church do every year for valentines, and I love how excited my kids get over gives little note cards to their buddies...all in all I love it, maybe I am just in love with love...and figure celebrating it all year round is the best idea, but whats wrong with giving it a huge celebration once a year!!! I will say I am with you on the SNOW enough already!!!

  13. Hey! Don't leave us hanging! We need a tutorial on the crepe paper flowers!

  14. I'm with you, Michelle. I don't really see the point in all the hoopla. But then I'm no romantic. I say bring me a plant, not flowers. Bring me a real rock, not diamonds.

  15. I don't really get decorating for Valentines, but I do like to do a small celebration. Just a nice dinner at home an exchanging cards, nothing big. I do think the holiday has gotten a bit out of hand, though!

  16. I agree about buying silly things for Valentine's Day..but because I'm single...I think it's the perfect excuse to wear a bunch of pink and order an entire pizza that I consume throughout the day! Granted, I do the pizza thing on most holidays! I hope that you're able to find something fun to do since it's a holiday!

  17. Well I totally understand I use to feel the same way, but recently for whatever reason I am in love with the holiday. Decorating for it at least. My husband reminds me often that I use to think it was a scam of a holiday. Hinting that I am getting nothing for the day, (which is totally cool) ;)
So I use to feel the same way but now for some reason I love it!:)

  18. I am TOTALLY with u! I have always loathed it and thought it was totally overrated.

We don't celebrate, we never have and I don't decorate....I guess I am brutal too! Ha!!!!!

  19. With you all the way! As a fairly new blogger, I have had to decide what trends I will bend to and what I won't. Not doing valentine's or St. Patrick's just because I don't like the colors and associated decor. And I am BORED with all the valentine tabletops. Enough already! and thank you for being the first to say it.

  20. Hi Michelle!

I could not agree with you more. I always tell my husband, don't buy me flowers. I would rather he surprise me on any other day, just because! I just started my blog and it is about a fushia colored peony in my yard. How funny is that? Could you share a little tutorial on how to make these? Thank you and "Happy Non-Valentine's Day"!

  21. I love ... love. Whether it's your best friend, or sister, daughter or hubs. And give me flowers and dark chocolate every week.

  22. Some people actually need the sad, commercial reminder that its important to LOVE & BE LOVED. With that said, I fall sucker. I'll take any excuse to do something fun for my hubby.

But the peonies are nice. :)

  23. Must be the snow. I just told my husband not to get me flowers. I have some beautiful roses I bought for 10 dollars.. I don't want any chocolate at all. And I won't be home Monday night either. boo hoo hoo. it must be all the cold weather and snow??

  24. I am totally with you, no dinner out for me, and give me a snickers and I am good, and please DO NOT waste money on overpriced flowers that are going to look like the have been hung the next day and I don't even want a card. However I have loved decorating for Valentine's day this year (which cost me nothing)and if my honey and I sit down together at the table and eat a frozen pizza and share our day, that will be perfect!

  25. I'm not a fan of V-day either, but I do like your flowers =)

  26. I agree. but not that I am not in love with love. I am so in love with my husband and family that I cannot stand to act like it is a one day special deal. I would much rather get flowers or any thoughtful gift on a day that wasn't suggested by a card company or just because everyone else does it. I do love your peonies and remember making them many years ago out of hip 70's colors. At this point in the winter, they are inspiration for the coming spring! And that's lovely!

  27. Not to mention that finding neat Valentines decorations is the pits! I really like your peonies. Before my daughter was married, she used to call Valentines "Singleness Awareness Day." Cherry Kay

  28. Me too! And that's awful, cause it's my anniversary. But I don't want a $50 bouquet of flowers - I'd much rather spend it at Home Depot :))

    ReplyDelete
  29. Amen!! I told my husband when we were dating that I don't celebrate V- Day, and he couldn't be happier! We totally ignore it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I think it's silly, too. And I guess I rubbed off on my daughter. We were in Wal-Mart today and immediately saw no less than 3 carts that had giant teddy bears in them... My daughter wandered over to the bears, saw the $40 price tag and told me "Mom, I'd rather have the $40!" Love her :)

  31. I love any day to celebrate LOVE!! Not necessarily with hearts and flowers, just the recognition of what Love truly means, If you have a chance pop on over and read my Vday post and you will see what I mean, KS
