DIY Chevron Floorcloth

After making my canvas placemats, I had a small amount of canvas left and decided to create a floorcloth. I have always wanted to try one, so I went for it. Being enamored with the Chevron pattern right now, I thought I would use it and seemed simple enough to create. First I primed and painted the piece of canvas, I did this on a scrap board so no one would walk on it while it was wet

Next, using 2 inch painter's tape, I created the Chevron pattern. I just eyeballed it, I was not going for perfection.

Using some black enamel paint left over from another project, I painted away!


After it dried, I took off the tape, and blurred the painted edges so it wouldn't look so "tapey" and laid it in the foyer.
I love how it looks and it added a great graphic pop!
It doesn't move around as much as I thought it would, and it's wearing pretty good.
This is a fun project, and didn't take very long at all!

Our Vintage Woodland Shelf

This shelf has been around for a few decades, it's been in the family for at least 50+ years. It's a mammoth piece, measuring in at about 3' X 4'. I just knew that the dated stain could be updated with a fresh coat of paint.


I knew exactly where it wanted to hang, and I knew that it would look fantastic with my vintage Mikasa, that Justin got me for my birthday! Isn't it fantastic pattern? Designed by Vera Neumann, a well known artist, turned textile designer, created this, among others for Mikasa in the 50's, 60's and 70's. This pattern was discontinued in 1974, it's called Woodland. When I saw this set at a local antique shop, I really went weak in the knees! This pattern is very hard to find! It is a service for six, so I thought I could display quite a few pieces on the shelf.It seemed like forever to paint the shelf, 2 coats of primer and 3 coats of white semi-gloss. I took off the lower rung with the little bobbers in it, which to me it didn't seem to fit the style of the shelf. I used pliers to pull each one out and then reattached the top piece to cover up the holes. I suppose I could have used wood filler to cover the holes, but using the existing rung was a good way to upcycle an otherwise odd piece. I'm still trying to figure out something interesting to do with the thingies I took out...maybe earrings, or a cool chunky necklace...I'm still working out the details. At any rate I am really loving the piece.

Now because I plan on using my priceless-to-me Vera dinnerware, I didn't want to run the risk of the plates slipping down, so a quick trip to Lowe's to pick up some tiny quarter round molding. After painting it white I attached it near the back of each shelf to act as a plate stop. Can you see it below?

Now in addition to my regular plate addiction, my newest addiction are stray plates. You know, the one of a kind plates that you always see thrifting...you like it but don't buy it because it's a loner...and I have to thank Christina at Down and Out Chic, she started me thinking about the possibilities of a plate wall...where none of the plates match. I know, I know, this is not front page news, but it just never occurred to me. I always had this mental image of the perfect "Charles Faudree" plate wall in my head, and well that's just not me. A plate wall can be artistic and eclectic, now that's me. I have only found a few so far, but am very patient.

This owl plate is from Limoges, but I couldn't find out very much about it, I would like to find more of him!

My loner plates can live on the shelf for now, I want to get some of those disc hangers for when I start hanging.

Spray Painting Again

Yes, I've been spray painting again. Beautiful weather results in outdoor projects, like transforming my latest Goodwill finds. I have been looking for a few more orange accessories for our living room, to no avail. So I'm taking matters into my own hands.

Stopping by GW the other day, I found three potential victims projects for my next spray painting adventure! A nice sized ginger jar shaped canister (12" with lid on) , and two smaller vases ( 6" & 4")

Even with just the primer coat, they looked better

I had to do 3 coats on the fruit canister, I didn't want to see any of that shining through

2 coats handled the blue vase

I wanted to keep the ginger jar white, so I painted it with 2 coats of Glossy White, pumpkin orange for the smaller one and blue ocean breeze for the bigger vase. All from Krylon.

Smooth as a baby's bottom!

After they dried, I gave them a couple of hours, I brought them inside.

...and played some more...

Spring Time Garland

Thank you for all the comments on my upcycled Easter candy containers! They were so fun to do! Now, I'm going to show you what I did with the lids! You might remember that I made a Lucky Garland for St. Patty's Day in the same fashion, but this garland, I used lids as the base! They were a perfect size!

Here's what you'll need for this project:

Upcycled lids

Hot glue gun

Crepe Paper

Book paper and scrap book paper

Mod Podge

Glitter

Chipboard letters

Embellies

Jute

Because of the ridges on the top of the lid, I Mod Podged book paper to some heavy card stock, and then glued them onto the top of the lid. This just added a extra layer of strength, because I use vintage book paper and that can rip pretty easy.

Next, I glittered the edges of the lid, because let's face it, everything is better with a little glitter on it! I again used Mod Podge as an adhesive for the glitter and instantly the edges look great!

Let the Mod Podge dry

(did I really just include glue drying time as a step with a picture? Hmmmm, Oh yes, there it is, I think I need help.)

Next, using crepe paper, create a ruffle around the back of the lid. I found this to be very convenient, the ruffle stayed nice and neat.

I used some chipboard letters and painted them a heavenly shade of blue

(It's so sparkly!)

I used some embellies and buttons that coordinated

and notice that I used different letter style a couple of times, I like how using a different style letter gives the garland a "ransom" look, but in reality, I didn't have all the letters I needed, in one style...in the words of my husband: Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome!

To make it look more purposeful, I punched out a little circle and layered it on the lid, these letters where smaller so they needed some extra body. Just because we improvised, doesn't mean it has to look that way!
(It's so shiny!)

Finally, I evenly glued jute to the back of the lids and it was done! I just love the Hot pink and Cool Aqua together!

I hung it across our hutch and it looks so happy!
